A wild elephant has been found dead in the Vinh Cuu Natural Conservation Zone in the southern province of Dong Nai, possibly due to eating pesticide-laden fruits.
Zone staff discovered the decomposed carcass yesterday morning in Ma Da commune, Vinh Cuu District.
“Based on the animal’s bones, we think it weighed around 300 kg,” Tran Van Mui, director of the conservation zone, said.
It could have died a few months ago, and is the eighth elephant to die since June 2009 at the zone, he said.
It could have died due to eating fruits from trees treated with pesticides, he said.
In the afternoon authorities conducted a post-mortem on the animal.
