Eight people died and 10 others were injured in a horrific accident on the high-speed Trung Luong Expressway in Long An Province early this morning when a van slammed into a truck from behind.
Local police said after preliminary investigations that the truck, which had been heading for Ho Chi Minh City, lost control after suddenly suffering a flat tire.
It veered to the left and that proved fatal on a highway where vehicles are allowed to travel at 120 kilometers per hour. A 16-seat passenger van that was coming behind could not avoid the truck and crashed into it.
Five people in the van were killed on the spot and their bodies are being kept at the Long An General Hospital. Thirteen people were injured and taken to Cho Ray hospital in HCMC where three of them succumbed to their injuries. The rest are being treated.
Around 1,100 vehicles suffered flat tires on the expressway in just nine months since it opened in February 2010, Tien Phong newspaper reported quoting official figures.
