Traffic jam still bugs city after holiday

TUOITRE

Tourists were still bugged by overloaded roads and ferry boats as they were returning to Ho Chi Minh City after the April 30/May 1 holiday.
Long lines of vehicles were still found at Binh Khanh Ferry in Can Gio District and Cat Lai Ferry in District 2 yesterday morning, when tourists were returning home from beaches in Can Gio and Vung Tau City.

Many at Binh Khanh Ferry said they had for half an hour to get on a ferry.

Tran Minh Hung, director of Cat Lai Ferry, said his ferry had received the highest number of passengers over a decade during this holiday.

Only April 30 only, 81.600 passengers used Cat Lai ferry services.

And at Suoi Tien Park, Le Anh Tuan from the HCMC Department of Transport said traffic police could only reduce part of the jam here.

Le Ngoc Hung, deputy director of the city’s Urban Traffic Management Unit 2, said traffic police had also tried hard to relieve jam near Song Than Station in Thu Duc District.

But he said traffic jam in this area, which occurs often, could only be solved completely by this year’s end, after the completion of the Go Dua Intersection.

At another gateway to HCMC, tourists also crowded National Highway 1A as they were returning from tourist sites in the Mekong Delta region.

Tien Giang Traffic Police said that they were stationing officers at every crossroads along this highway to cope with the situation.
