A university student from Nghe An Province studying in Hanoi pretended to be kidnapped to test if her parents cared about her.
Mai (name changed) left her house last Tuesday and sent a text message to her sister who also lives in Hanoi saying, “You have not see your sister return? We are holding her.”
Her sister tried to call Mai but could not reach her, and reported to the Thanh Xuan District police.
The “kidnapper” then demanded a VND500 million (US$24,500) ransom by 1pm the next day.
The police found Mai staying in a guest house in Cau Giay District.
At the police station, she confessed that since she received no attention from her parents, she made up the kidnap story to see if they would come to Hanoi to find her.
