Dolphins artificially propagated, to be on sale

Can Tho University in cooperation with An Giang Aquatic Breeding Center has succeeded in artificially propagating freshwater dolphins and expect to sell them this October.

Freshwater or river dolphin is an aquatic creature that primarily comes to spawn in the upstream of Tien and Hau rivers in An Giang and Dong Thap provinces.

They fetch quite high a price, approximately VND400,000 – 500,000/kg.

Vietnam delays lethal injection plan

Vietnam was supposed to execute the condemned by lethal injection as of July 1 instead of the firing squad but the plan has been delayed, probably until September.

The switch to lethal injection was passed by the legislature National Assembly last year but Ministry of Public Security has proposed a delay until September 1 for some preparations.

The ministry has submitted the postponement plan to the National Assembly’s Justice Committee, blaming it on “unavailable conditions” for the injections.

According to Le Thi Nga, deputy chairperson of the Committee, facilities for lethal injection need to be set up and executioners also need to be trained in the new method.

Relevant agencies are also stepping up the completion of a decree to guide the implementation of the Law, the official said.

Under the Law on Execution of Criminal Verdicts that took effect from July 1, Vietnam will carry out the death penalty using lethal injection.

The Committee urged the ministry to step up its preparations so that lethal injection can be applied as soon as possible.

The ministry has submitted a plan to build lethal injection facilities to the Prime Minister for approval.

Due to the delay, the schedule for execution will also be postponed until September, Nga said.

Chinese Communist Party delegation visits VN

A high-ranking delegation of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on June 23 paid a courtesy visit to Dinh The Huynh, Politburo member, member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Secretariat and Head of CPVCC Commission for Popularisation and Education.

While in Vietnam from June 20-24, the CPCCC’s International Liaison Department delegation, led by its Deputy Director Liu Jieyi, was received by member of the CPVCC and Head of the CPVCC Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan.

They discussed the situation and cooperation plan for 2011 with Deputy Head of the CPVCC Commission for External Relations Nguyen Manh Hung.

During their five-day stay, they also toured Ho Chi Minh City and the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa.

World’s oldest person dies at 119 in Vietnam

Vietnam’s oldest woman and probably the world’s oldest on Saturday died at the age of 119 in the southern province of Long An.

Tran Thi Viet, died at 4:30, confirmed Tran Tan Nho, head of the Tuyen Binh Tay commune government in Long An.

Memorial services start Monday.

Last year, the Vietnam Records Books (Vietkings) announced it has necessary papers to prove Viet as the oldest documented person in the world to replace Eunice Sanborn of Texas who was just 114 or 113 years old then.

Sanborn died in February this year at her home in Jacksonville, Texas at the age of either 115 or 114. Sanborn’s exact age is in dispute. The Guinness Book of World Records, which gave her the title, said she was 114, however her family insisted that the U.S. Census erred and that she was in fact 115.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's Viet, a local from Vinh Hung District in the Mekong Delta has been honored as a “Vietnamese Heroic Mother,” a title reserved for women who lost their children or husband during the war.

Viet’s husband, her seven children and a grandson all died in the war. Viet herself used to be imprisoned and tortured by the enemy.

Vietnam to cut meat imports

Vietnam’s meat imports this year will be less than last year’s 83,000 tons, the Animal Husbandry Department has forecast.
Hoang Kim Giao, its head, said imports so far this year have amounted to 30,000 tons, mostly of chicken’s legs and wings, less than in the same period last year.

He attributed the falling trend to the increase in domestic production as livestock farming recovers from last year’s disease outbreak.

Pork output this year is estimated at 4.3 million tons, enough to meet demand, he said.

He denied reports that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has demanded to stop importing meat.

Rubber prices bounce back

The price of SVR 3L, the major rubber variety Vietnam exports, has increased by 3.6 percent to US$488 per ton on the world market in the past two weeks, the Vietnam Rubber Group said.

This has boosted the domestic prices of latex by 9.4 percent to VND30000-36000 per liter, it added.

The hike in prices is due to increased demand from China and India, the two biggest importers, while production in major exporting nations like the Philippines and Indonesia is lower than expected due to unfavorable weather conditions.

The increase in the prices of oil and fuel has also affected the prices. 

But the price remains far off the record high of $600 touched two months ago.

So far this year Vietnam has shipped 212,300 tons of rubber worth US$934 million, mainly to China, Japan, and Europe.

Vietnam’s Visa market grows most: expert

Lorijon Bacchi, director of the Indochina region of the payment card network Visa, said Vietnam has had the strongest growth of all Visa markets.

Vietnam is new in the online payment market but she said last week that it has vast potential thanks to huge growth in terms of international payment card numbers, total number of transactions and total revenue of transactions by cards.

By late last year, Visa had 1.5 million cardholders in Vietnam, an increase of 22 percent, the strongest Visa growth in the region.

The total revenue of transactions of Visa in Vietnam in the first quarter was US$176 million, an increase of nearly 60 percent year-on-year.

Bacchi said she appreciated the potential of Vietnam’s card market given its current strong development of e-commerce.

“Vietnam has the biggest number of people using mobile phones among countries I have ever come across,” she said, adding that 31 percent of the Vietnamese population use Internet, while the country ranked 17th among the countries joining online social networks. Online trade revenue of Vietnamese firms last year rose by 50 percent from the previous year.

She said that e-commerce was a good foundation to develop online payments so that in the future institutions would help to strengthen the online system in Vietnam by making it convenient for banks to join the operation and widen their card acceptance point network, and offer training for bank staff.

The company has cooperated with 30 local and foreign banks in Vietnam.

All card products and money transfer operations are provided by banks while all payment transactions are done by Visa’s system.

Last year, global payment revenue via Visa cards was around US$3.3 trillion.

Vietnam willing to assist Japan after disasters

The Government and people of Vietnam always support, share and are willing to do all things possible to assist the Japanese people to overcome aftermaths of the recent quake and tsunami.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai made this statement during his meetings with Japan’s ministers of foreign affairs, economy, trade industry, finance and land, infrastructure and tourism, and key officials of the Japanese Federation of Economic Organizations (Nippon Keidanren) in Tokyo on May 25.

He expressed deep sympathy over heavy losses caused by the March 11 twin disaster to the Japanese government and people and believed they will surmount all difficulties to return to normal production and continue development.

The Deputy PM thanked for Japan’s assistance to Vietnam despite difficulties, assuring that Vietnam will effectively use Japan ’s official development assistance.

He stressed Vietnam’s readiness to work with Japan to accelerate major projects agreed by both sides.

Hai expressed his wish that the two sides would increase exchanges of delegations, especially high-level ones, to promote political, economic relations, trade and cultural exchange between the two governments and people.

In return, Japanese officials expressed their thanks for the Government and people of Vietnam for their timely assistance as well as affirmed their wish to boost cooperation with Vietnam in implementing large projects, especially in infrastructure development to serve economic development and the people.

Vietnam year-on-year inflation nears 20%

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) in May surged by 2.21 percent against April, bringing the country’s CPI to 12.07 percent this year - a 19.78 percent rise year on year, according to Vietnam General Statistics Office (GSO).

Of the 11 commodity groups, only the price of posts and telecommunications services saw a month-on-month drop of 1.68 percent.

The sharpest price increase, 3.19 percent, was found in housing and construction materials, including housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials.

Prices of food and catering services followed suit with an increase of 3.01 percent from the previous month, of which food surged the strongest - 3.53 percent.

Transportation price continued to hike at 2.67 percent compared with April.

Among the remaining 7 categories, four exceeded and two approached the 1 percent increase.

Not included in the basket of the consumer price index, gold price index had an increase of 1.43 percent while the US dollar price index was down 0.98 percent compared with April.

In terms of locations, the Mekong Delta’s Can Tho City saw the highest CPI increase of 2.35 percent, followed by HCMC (2.38 percent) and Hai Phong City (1.97 percent).

Vietnam has yet to revise its inflation target in 2011 which was set at 7 percent at the beginning of this year.

More Asian sweets come to Vietnam

Some confectionery brands from Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have recently emerged in Vietnam supermarkets with reasonable prices and appetizing flavors.

While domestic confectionery manufacturers have been increasing prices, an average price of VND25-35,000 (US$1-1.5) per pack of imported sweets are an attractive alternative.

Only in the first quarter of 2011, confectionery firms have imported $46 million worth of confectionery and cereal products, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Beer companies get a buzz in Vietnam

Vietnamese are drinking billions of liters of beer every year, according to statistics from domestic and foreign breweries and importers.

Dutch beer company Heineken said it sold 200 million liters in Vietnam last year, making the country the third largest out of the 170 markets worldwide behind the US and France.

Vietnam was set to overtake France to become the second biggest market by 2012, and could reach top spot by 2015, it said.

The Saigon Beer - Alcohol - Beverage Joint Stock Corporation (SABECO), a domestic brewery, sold 1.088 billion liters of its Saigon and other beers in 2010.

It targets sales of 1.3 billion liters this year and 2 billion liters in 2015.

Beer consumption has kept rising in Vietnam regardless of the state of its economy, a SABECO official said.

Many breweries are being set up or upgraded and more and more foreign beers are being imported.

The Saigon Port customs said imports rose by half over 2009 to more than 1.66 million bottles and cans of liquor, beer, and wine.

This year SABECO has opened three new plants and upgraded two existing ones.

Vietnam Brewery Limited, which makes BGI, Bivina, and other beers, has upgraded the capacity of its factory in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 12 from 280 million liters a year to 420 million liters.

The Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA) launched the sixth International Art Photography contest and exhibition in Hanoi on May 23, with the support of the International Federation of Photographic Art.

Chairman of the VAPA Vu Quoc Khanh said the event aims to help Vietnamese photographers improve their skills, especially in taking professional art photos, as well as expand exchanges with international counterparts.

The organising board will receive entries, including coloured or black and white photos, from June 15 to August 31 on the website www.contestvn2011.com or through the email contestvn2011@gmail.com .

Foreigners who are working and living in Vietnam also can send their entries with the theme “ Vietnam ’s images through international friends’ lens” to the contest.

Spanish model with a Vietnamese soul

Sixteen-year-old model Andrea Aybar is often seen in Vietnamese magazines and fashion shows in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The Spanish girl first came to Vietnam with her father and brother eight years ago. Before coming here, she had no idea about the country and asked “Where is it? What does it look like?”

But after just 10 days in Vietnam, she told her father: “Dad, let’s stay here, let’s not go back.”

She has lived in Vietnam ever since.

She took a Vietnamese name: Nguyen Thi An. Nguyen is the most common Vietnamese surname, Thi indicates a person is a female, and An is short for her first name.

Her first modeling assignment came three years ago, when Spanish designer Diego, a friend of her father, invited her to shoot for his new Chula collection. During the photo shoot, Andrea met Ha Vy, a model and director of Venus Model Agency.

Seeing Andrea’s posing abilities and natural beauty, Vy asked her to become an exclusive model for her agency. After getting her father’s approval, Andrea stepped into the modeling world at the age of 14.

However, she also goes to school, not an international one but a Vietnamese school. Andrea joined third grade in Hanoi when she was 10 and amazed classmates and teachers with her fluent Vietnamese.

“It was the first time I had a foreign student,” Nguyen Tuong Van, Andrea’s eighth grade teacher, said.

“Only her appearance is different from other students. She follows school rules and works hard just like a Vietnamese. Andrea also has great knowledge of arts, which amazes me.

Andrea loves Vietnamese literature and history and is fond of To Huu’s poems and old fairy tales. She also loves Vietnamese food and often wanders around streets in Hanoi.

Recently she got a Vietnamese stepmother who teaches her how to cook traditional dishes like sour fish soup and braised fish in clay pot.

The 16-year-old is also a bridge between her two cultures, helping bring Vietnamese customs and the language into her family.

“My father has lived for very long in Vietnam but cannot speak Vietnamese. I often do translations for his business.”

This summer the young model is also excited at the prospect of becoming a real Vietnamese: “I’ll be a naturalized Vietnamese in a month. After that, I’ll make an ID and show everyone that I am a real Vietnamese, not a foreigner as people often call me.”

In 24 hours until yesterday evening there were six major accidents around the country in which eight people were killed, including three children.

Yesterday afternoon, on National Highway 1A in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City, a tanker travelling in the wrong lane hit a motorbike driven by Nguyen Van Chung. 

His wife, Nguyen Thi My Luon, and son, Nguyen Van Bin, fell on the road and were run over by the truck.

The driver, Le Hong Khanh, 24, helped take them to the nearby Van Phuoc General Clinic, but they were declared dead on arrival.

“The woman was run over on her chest while the boy was severely injured in the head and legs,” a nurse, Le Duc Duong, said. “They may have died on the way here.”

The victims belonged to Hung Dien commune, Tan Hung District in neighboring Long An Province.

Earlier, on Sunday night, a concrete pillar left behind after some construction in the Rach Cam River in Can Tho fell on a small boat carrying bricks, sinking it.

On board were Duong Dac Thang, 42, of Vinh Long province, and his wife and daughter Pham Thi Bich Hanh, 39, and Duong Thi Diem Hang, 10. 

Hanh and Hang were carried away by strong currents and local rescue workers found their bodies yesterday morning. 

The pole had been installed five years ago for construction of a bridge and never removed, a local official said.

The local police said the column was badly eroded.

Yesterday morning a stationary truck that was being repaired on National Highway 1A in Thang Binh District in the central Quang Nam Province was hit from by another truck.

The driver of the rear truck died on the spot and both vehicles were damaged, police said.

Evan as the police were working at the scene, another collision occurred 200 meters away between a truck and a container trailer, injuring one of the drivers.

The two accidents blocked the highway, leaving vehicles queued up for 15 km on the highway.

At 10 pm yesterday two young men were killed in a major accident on National Highway 1A in Ben Luc District, Long An province.

Huynh Thanh Tung, 34, a local, and Phan Thanh Nguyen of Can Tho were on a motorbike and tried to overtake a container truck at high speed, according to the local police. 

After they got past the truck, they crashed into the road divider, fell on the road, and were fatally run over by the truck.

Yesterday afternoon a child died in an accident in Buon Ma Thuot city in Dak Lak Province.

It happened when a motorbike driven by Cao Son Tuyen, 25, was swiped by a truck at the Phan Boi Chau-Phan Chu Trinh crossroads.

His wife Tran Thi Tuyen, 20, had been carrying their three-month-old baby Cao Gia Tue who died instantly.

The couple were seriously injured and are in hospital in critical condition.

Victoria’s Secret model to perform in Vietnam

Heather Marks, the Canadian model from the glamorous lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret, will be a guest model at the upcoming “Long-legged Festival” fashion show taking place in Vietnam this month.

Venus Fashion, the local show organizer, has said it paid around VND1 billion ($50,000) to have Marks performing in Vietnam.

"This is a large amount to pay for a model to appear in the show. Still, our company hoped that with the performance of an international model like Heather Marks on the catwalk, we can offer our guests a valuable show as well as setting up a high position for Venus’s ‘Long-Legged Festival’ in the industry,” said Vu Khac Tiep, director of the agency.

Heather Marks, 23, was born in Calgary, Alberta. Making her entry into the fashion world at age 15, Heather Marks has appeared in hundreds of fashion shows and commercials around the world, as well as on many magazine covers. She has also been selected to be one of the “angels” of Victoria's Secret.

The “Long-legged Festival” is an annual event by the Vietnamese model agency Venus Fashion, offering a chance for models in the HCM City and Hanoi to enrich and exchange their experience.

This year’s show, the most expensive so far of the agency, will be directed by Pham Hoang Nam, a well-known director of most top-class events in Vietnam, including Miss Vietnam World pageant.

Local pop star Ho Ngoc Ha will be the only singer performing at the show.

The event takes place on May 15, at 8 pm, at the Ocean Club, HCM City.

Vietnam to launch first tsunami warning stations

Vietnam’s first two early tsunami warning stations in the central city of Danang have been completed and will be put into trial operation on May 15.

The announcement was made yesterday by Do Phong Doanh, deputy director of military-owned telecom group Viettel's branch in Danang.

Under the permission of the Danang People’s Committee Viettel, Viettel built the two stations in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward in Linh Chieu District and at the Son Tra border station in Son Tra District.

Each of the stations has a 35 m-high antenna for wave absorption and an alarm system with a high-capacity siren speaker.

When the antenna receives tsunami signals, the alarm siren system will be activated and alert residents about the upcoming tsunami so that they can take safety measures.

In addition to these two centers, Viettel will set up 8 more stations in Danang to provide such information as how powerful and how high the tsunami is going to be, when it will come, which areas may be most affected, and which areas people should move to.

Super Junior show enthralls teen fans

The Korean boy band Super Junior (SuJu) heated up Go Dau stadium in Binh Duong province yesterday in the non-stop screams and shouts by ten thousand fans.

The show started at 7pm as one of the members, Dong Hae flew up in the middle of a stage and surprised the audience. 

Suju opened the show with famous hits like Sorry Sorry, Don’t Don, Supergirl while fans clapped their hands and danced to the tunes. Smiles and tears of happiness were seen on faces of several teen fans. 

The stadium was lit up with pearl sapphire blue lights and their fan club ELF-- Everlasting Friends, also waved thousands of blue light sticks and made a sea of sapphire blue, the club’s official color.

Besides group performances, 10 SuJu members also performed their solo songs, showed off their talents in playing different instruments and imitating  characters like Pharrao, Lady Gaga or Beyonce. 

The group also tried to go local in Vietnam, their last destination of Super Show 3 tour. Leetuk, the band leader, said “Xin Chao”--hello in Vietnamese and wore a cone hat gifted by fans during the show. As there was no MC, an introduction video was shown before each song. Images of Ben Thanh market in Suju’s video clips touched the hearts of many local fans.

An hour after the opening, rain started to fall but could not put out the fire inside Vietnamese and internationals EFLs, many of whom had flown to Ho Chi Minh City a couple days before to see their idols. 

“Every time we perform outdoor, it rains. Probably God loves us and makes it rain a little so the atmosphere will be cooler as places we often go are tropical Asian countries with hot climate,” said SuJu in an exclusive interview with TuoiTre before the show.

During three hours of the show, SuJu performed thirty four songs in Korean, English and Chinese on a big stage with LED screens, laser light effects and modern sound system.

Kang-In, one of SuJu members who is currently serving in Korean military, was brought to Vietnam yesterday night by special effects, making fans cry and scream non-stop.

SuJu fans also expressed their love to their idols by throwing stuffed animals or carrying food on stage.

The program was well organized with an alternation of dance and ballads so fans did not get bored and could keep their flame until the last performance.

Super Show 3 closed at 10pm, marking the end of the band’s Asian tour. 

Many ELFs said they were satisfied with the show since their favorite band had performed energetically and wholeheartedly as promised.

Formed in 2005 by SM Entertainment Co. Ltd., the 10-member Super Junior is the world’s largest boy band and has won numerous awards in and outside South Korea.

When the band first performed in Vietnam in March last year as part of an MTV campaign to help fight human trafficking, they drew 50,000 avid fans, mostly teenage girls.

The ticket prices for the show ranged from VND1.2 million (US$ 60) to VND3.5 million ($175).

South Korean Super Junior bous land in Vietnam

Vietnam, ADB sign $1.38 billion loan deal

Vietnam’s central bank and Asian Development Bank have reached a $1.38 billion lending deal to enhance nationwide clean water access, conserve threatened forests, and ease urban gridlock.

The loan agreement has been signed by State Bank of Vietnam Governor Nguyen Van Giau and Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Haruhiko Kuroda in Hanoi. Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung witnessed the signing ceremony.

“ADB’s assistance will help ensure that more people in Vietnam have access to clean water, more livable cities, and biologically diverse forests that will be preserved for future generations,” said Kuroda.

In many of Vietnam’s largest cities, 30 percent to 40 percent of treated water is lost before it reaches the end user. Moreover, four in every ten families have no connection to a central water supply system.

A $1 billion financial support facility from ADB will help improve clean water access for 3 million families in Vietnam’s cities, including half a million poor households who will receive their own piped water connection for the first time. The assistance is part of a larger $2.8 billion investment program.

With Vietnam’s forests coming under increasing pressure from rapid economic development and climate change, habitat restoration is needed not only to protect the country’s environmental treasures, but also to safeguard the livelihoods of indigenous communities.

A $30 million loan from ADB’s concessional Asian Development Fund will enhance cross-border cooperation in protecting a contiguous stretch of biodiversity-rich forest in Vietnam’s Central Annamites, which spans the highlands of Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam Provinces.

This is part of a larger program that is also supporting the preservation of key forestlands in Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The assistance package for Vietnam includes approximately $8 million to improve clean water and sanitation services and upgrade market roads in the 34 largely ethnic minority communes in the project area.

“Sustainable economic development and environmental preservation are intertwined,” said Mr. Kuroda. “In the long term, coupling conservation and livelihood improvements will help ensure that Vietnam’s forests and their biodiversity are managed well.”

The third component of the assistance is a $350 million loan, which is the first tranche of an overall $636 million ADB package. This package is supporting a $1.6 billion project to construct a modern expressway to the south of congested Ho Chi Minh City.

With the city’s population expected to swell by more than 50 percent by 2025, new roads are needed to complement other modes of transportation, including an ADB-supported metro rail system, to ensure the efficient transportation of goods and people.

The 57-kilometer expressway between Ben Luc and Long Thanh will reduce traffic in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City by allowing vehicles traveling from east to west to bypass the city center.

When the full expressway opens in 2017, it will reduce east-west travel time by 80 percent and cut the number of traffic accidents by 10 percent.

Contest seeks ideas to protect global environment

The British Council and UK-based Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance have launched a competition seeking ideas to protect the global environment in Vietnam and six other Asia- Pacific countries.
Title “E-idea 2011”, the competition is receiving entries from Vietnam, Australia, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand and Japan.

Participants from 18 to 35 years of age should present ideas that help protect the global environment and cope with climate change such as waste reduction, energy reduction, water efficiency and sustainable design.

In addition to financial support, the organizers will provide winners with leadership and project management training. 

Winners will also become members of the regional E-idea network and have opportunities to work with environmentalists worldwide. 

Entries will be received until July 3.

Meteor shower to light up Vietnam tomorrow

Meteor shower Eta Aquarids from Halley's Comet may light up the sky in Vietnam between the evening of May 5 and early morning of May 6, NASA has forecast.

Observers can see from 40 to 60 showers per hour in ideal weather conditions.

The best time to watch the Eat Aquarids is from 3:00 to 4:00 am on May 6, VnExpress newswire quoted Dang Vu Tuan Son, Chairman of Vietnam Club of Astronomy.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Duc Phuong, a member of the Vietnam Association of Astronomy and Space, said the Eat Aquarids should be seen with naked eyes since the speed of each meteor shower could reach 30km per second if seen through telescopes or binoculars.

A meteor shower is the result of an interaction between a planet and streams of debris from a comet.

The Eta Aquariids got their name because their radiant appears to lie in the constellation Aquarius, near one of the constellation's brightest stars, Eta Aquarii.
